The Swedish Government Awards SEK 20 Million to Swerim
The Swedish Government is allocating SEK 20 million to Swerim to strengthen research and development within the Swedish metal value chain. The decision is an important recognition of Swerim’s role as one of Sweden’s leading research and innovation environments in the metals sector, and of the significance of its activities for the development of future sustainable materials, processes, and technologies.
Through extensive laboratories as well as pilot and demonstration facilities, Swerim provides a unique research infrastructure that enables the development and scale-up of new technologies. This research environment is particularly important in areas such as battery technology, transport electrification, advanced materials for the nuclear industry, strengthened raw material resilience, and process and manufacturing technologies throughout the entire value chain.
– This is very positive news and an important confirmation of the long-term efforts that we have carried out together with Jernkontoret and Svemin. It is highly encouraging that our joint initiatives are now delivering results. Swerim plays a unique role in Sweden by developing the technologies, methods, and products needed to strengthen the competitiveness of the mining, mineral, and metals industries and to drive the transition towards a more sustainable metal value chain. Our activities are an essential complement in ensuring that Swedish industry can continue to remain at the forefront internationally, says CEO Pontus Sjöberg.
– A secure, reliable, and sustainable supply of minerals and metals is crucial for Sweden’s development, our preparedness, and the industry’s transition. Swerim’s activities play an important role in strengthening the entire metal value chain and thereby also our long-term competitiveness, says Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch.
Swerim is the only Swedish research organisation with an integrated research and testing environment covering the entire metal value chain – from raw materials and processes to finished materials and products. The funding will be used within the non-commercial part of Swerim’s operations.
